We have certainly come a long way in the field of Special Education since the year of 1797 when Jean Marc Gaspard Itard created a cognitive program for a child with special needs.
Recently, President Obama signed a new bill known as "Rosa's Law" to remove the term 'mental retardation' from all federal health, education and labor policy to be replaced with 'intellectual disability'. Once the documents are all revised, including IDEA, we should see intellectual disability as a criteria for special services instead of mental retardation which has been a hurtful label for children for too many years.
First, I want to compliment you on your blog! I think it is wonderful that you are very spiritual and care about our Mother Earth. I am glad to see other teachers who are educating our children about the importance of taking care of our land. I had a teacher who taught me these values in third grade, and your blog reminds me of her and it is very inspirational.
I enjoyed reading your quotes as well. This year, I took a new job with includes programs with early childhood special education. I have learned so much! I was always an advocate for people with special needs, however, I never had the opportunity to work closely with a program that provides services to children with special needs. It has been a beautiful journey so far and I truly look forward to learning more. Do you work with children with special needs?
